What advice would you give to a young woman entering a male-dominated profession?

My younger sister has just completed her aerospace engineering and wants to take up a job in manufacturing in a factory. My parents are worried that there aren’t too many women in such roles. What advice can we give her to handle herself well?

  1. Hi,

First of all my heartiest appreciation to your parents , for exploring and allowing this educational learning to their daughter.

Now to this enlightened family my invitation is to look at education and profession beyond gender. Its just a profession and required a certain skill.

A thought  to dive in, first we our ownself ( being females) have to take Profession as profession and focus on upgrading skills and delivering results.

First need to break internal barrier. Rest about male dominance (population) at work place, Consider it as work place and look at  them too as “Professional/ employees”.

Experience the journey of working together. In case your & their female/ male instincts/emotions comes in a way to perform then :

    1. Remind yourself your objective

2.Treat it as you treat any ailment(if u feel it so otherwise it’s just emotions). Simply enhance your physical and mental immunity.

My best wishes to your sister for this new endeavor. Will wait to listen from you her success stories.

    Regards

I would say – just give it your best and not think much about the “gender” aspect. There are so many women to take inspiration from Dr Swati Mohan, Kalpana Chawla, Sunita Williams, and all the women scientists/ engineers at ISRO who made ‘Mission Mangal’ possible
